Thursday was my birthday and I now 38 years old.\u00a0 Getting up there, aren’t I?\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

I had a relaxing mid-week celebration.\u00a0 Ben worked from home so I could have “time off work.”\u00a0 He made the kids their meals and took them to school and parent-teacher conferences.\u00a0 \u00a0First we opened presents; I got many thoughtful things.\u00a0 Ben got me this tortilla blanket that has become a family favorite.\u00a0 (And a Le Creuset pot and Kate Spade earrings, and many other lovely things.)<\/p>\n

I had a massage at a nearby spa, followed by a lunch date with Ben at Hops and Pie<\/a>.\u00a0 Love that place.\u00a0 Every meal I’ve had there is delicious.<\/p>\n

Mom and Dad were planning to come up this weekend, but alas, another snowstorm has blown through.\u00a0 They made the safe and reasonable choice to stay home.<\/p>\n

My penpal Steffi also had her birthday this month.\u00a0 I asked her what sort of cake she had, and she said she made a “Donauwelle” cake.\u00a0 Despite my years watching Food Network and GBBO and collecting cookbooks, I have never heard of this cake that she claims is very popular in her country.\u00a0 Intrigued, she linked me a recipe<\/a> and I made my own!<\/p>\n

Delicious!\u00a0 I found “Morello cherries” imported from Germany at Trader Joe’s (Thanks, Amanda!) that looked like the ones I saw used by German youtubers<\/a> making the cake.\u00a0 My chocolate layer is not very dark, and the sponge was a bit dry.\u00a0 Maybe I overbaked it or added too much flour (for high altitude).\u00a0 But Ben and my friends, who came to share, all loved it.\u00a0 Unlike American cakes, it was only mildly sweet.\u00a0 I loved the pudding buttercream layer.\u00a0 I’ll have to try this one again someday.\u00a0 I sent a picture to Steffi to see if she approves \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
