First you saute diced <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\">portabello<\/span> mushroom in a little olive oil.  Remove the mushroom and saute onion, carrots, and celery.  Add bay leaf and the split peas and cook for not 20 minutes (according to the package) or 1 hour (according to <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\">Bittman<\/span>) but THREE HOURS.  <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\">GAh<\/span>.  Why do legumes hate me???<br \/>Sorry.  At the end of cooking stir in parsley, <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\">parmesan<\/span> cheese, and the reserved mushrooms.  Delicious.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6383\/1078\/1600\/DSCF0038-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSCF0038-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>Hot wings and crudites with blue cheese dip.  <span class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\">Mmmmm<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger2\/6383\/1078\/1600\/DSCF0036-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSCF0036-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>I made applesauce (below) and then used it in this <a href=\"http:\/\/marthastewart.com\/page.jhtml?type=content&amp;id=recipe1120016&amp;search=true&amp;resultNo=4\">applesauce spice cake<\/a>.
