{"id":317,"date":"2015-01-19T02:48:00","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T02:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eaumaison.wordpress.com\/2015\/01\/19\/the-dinner-game"},"modified":"2015-01-19T02:48:00","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T02:48:00","slug":"the-dinner-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eaumaison.us\/index.php\/2015\/01\/19\/the-dinner-game\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dinner Game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We were fed up with dinners.\u00a0 Jack had a narrow range of acceptable meals to him, and the range was getting smaller all the time.\u00a0 Foods previously enjoyed were now shunned with a side of whining.\u00a0 Dinner was a stress-fest of anxious questioning from Jack while I cooked, declaring he didn&#8217;t like and wouldn&#8217;t eat it before I even served it.\u00a0 During meals we tried all the usual tactics &#8211; modeling, disguising, offering, ignoring, negotiating, cajoling, bribing, and threatening.<\/p>\n<p>Ben and I were sick of eating the same foods over and over, and sick of dealing with the dinner wars.\u00a0 After losing two disastrous battles (dubbed the Spaghetti Meltdown and the Teryaki Incident) we parents came up with a new strategy.\u00a0 <i>The Dinner Game.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>You start each meal with three tokens.\u00a0 You lose a token for each rule you break.\u00a0 The person\/people with the most tokens at the end of the meal get a sticker on the chart towards a reward of their choice.\u00a0 The rules are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wait until after the prayer to start eating<\/li>\n<li>No complaining about what is on your plate <\/li>\n<li>You must try everything on your plate<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Try&#8221; means either a single bite that is chewed and swallowed, or three separate licks with your tongue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Take turns talking (no interrupting)<\/li>\n<li>Sit properly in your seat unless excused<\/li>\n<li>BONUS: You can earn back a single token by finishing your whole plate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0Did it work?\u00a0 OH MY GOSH THIS WORKED SO HARD MY LIFE IS RENEWED AND THERE IS JOY IN THE WORLD. <\/p>\n<p>I honestly can&#8217;t believe how well this worked.\u00a0 We&#8217;re talking like night and day different.\u00a0 Eating together is pleasant!\u00a0 Jack looks forward to dinner and enjoys it!\u00a0 I enjoy cooking for us now!\u00a0 Everything is so much better. <\/p>\n<p>Let me add that I started a second change at the same time.\u00a0 I went back to cooking dinners from recipes instead of memory and improvisation.\u00a0 I spend time finding new things to try and making meal plans.\u00a0 I mostly have used the Blue Apron Cookbook and the new Mark Bittman &#8220;How to Cook Everything Fast&#8221; book. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueapron.com\/recipes\/pan-roasted-pork-with-bacon-brussels-sprout-sweet-potato-hash\">Pork and sweet potato\/brussel sprout hash<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueapron.com\/recipes\/chicken-schnitzel-with-watercress-apple-golden-beet-red-walnut-salad\">Schnitzel with beet salad<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Chicken tacos with queso fresca, avocado, and lime<\/li>\n<li>Spaghetti with vegetable-rich meatballs and broccoli<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We ate that last one tonight.\u00a0 YOU GUYS.\u00a0 Jack ate broccoli.\u00a0 BROCCOLI!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know why. \u00a0 He tried it, grimaced down a bite, rubbed his tummy and declared it good.\u00a0 Then he choked down the rest of it with copious water, &#8220;This is just to help swallow it down to my tummy.&#8221; He doesn&#8217;t have to finish everything.\u00a0 But he DID.\u00a0 He loves this game.\u00a0 He&#8217;s going to make the missionaries play it when they come to eat this week.\u00a0 Sometimes we declare &#8220;special rules&#8221;
