{"id":228,"date":"2015-06-05T03:25:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T03:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eaumaison.wordpress.com\/2015\/06\/05\/nyc-day-3"},"modified":"2015-06-05T03:25:00","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T03:25:00","slug":"nyc-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eaumaison.us\/index.php\/2015\/06\/05\/nyc-day-3\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC Day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:left;\">Sunday was packed with plans.\u00a0 We managed to have another great day despite the sweltering, sticky heat of the morning and the heavy down-pouring of rain in the evening.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">We started by taking a train to Soho.\u00a0 Ben deduced that New York runs on Mountain time &#8211; nothing opened until 11 or noon and then it all stays open until 2 or 4 am.\u00a0 Perfect if we don&#8217;t adjust our watches from Denver time!<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">Luckily <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chobani.com\/culture\/chobani-soho\">Chobani&#8217;s cafe<\/a> opens early enough to call it breakfast (let&#8217;s ignore the doughnut I snagged from a street cart).\u00a0 Amanda tipped me off to this place and I&#8217;m so glad she did.\u00a0 I could eat his yogurt every morning: plain unsweetened chobani, orange, pistachios, dark chocolate, honey, and mint.\u00a0 Delish!\u00a0 Ben ordered a &#8220;bagel and cream cheese&#8221; using air quotes to mimic the menu.\u00a0 It turned out to be a really good and crunchy simit bread crusted with sesame seeds and shaped into a ring.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/17732903064\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/c4.staticflickr.com\/8\/7771\/17732903064_1cdb838bf1_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">I really tried not to eat a Laduree macaron.\u00a0 I just wanted to gawk at the pretties.\u00a0 Ben insisted.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t have to tell me twice.\u00a0 I got apricot.\u00a0 He got . . . I forget.\u00a0 It was the two toned pink and orange one.\u00a0 We agreed that they were amazing and the best macarons ever tried &#8211; but still maybe overpriced at $2.80 each.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/17734898223\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/337\/17734898223_6394b68978_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">I tried on frames at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warbyparker.com\/\">Warby Parker<\/a> store and we bought Sam a T-shirt at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitzkidsnyc.com\/\">Japanese(?) kids store<\/a> where Jack was too big for their size 8-9 year old.\u00a0 We camped out in Starbucks with tall icy herbal teas while we waited for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purlsoho.com\/purl\">Purl Soho<\/a> to open at noon.\u00a0 If I didn&#8217;t have such a great local shop in Fancy Tiger I would have spent hours there and a lot more money.\u00a0 After much deliberation I settled on a subtle color choice in their lovely store-brand yarn, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purlsoho.com\/purl\/products\/item\/9249-Purl-Soho-Line-Weight\">Line Weight<\/a>.\u00a0 I already started a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravelry.com\/projects\/eaumaison\/cypri\">project<\/a> with it and I&#8217;m loving how this yarn knits.\u00a0 (Crap! Their website has different colors and some are on sale.\u00a0 I&#8217;m salivating to buy more.)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18329102836\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/487\/18329102836_d236d960e4_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">At this point we hoped to take the train to an Ethiopian restaurant, but I was worried about making it to our show in time.\u00a0 We opted to ride straight back to Times Square and find food there.\u00a0 We ate at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnspizzerianyc.com\/Locations\">John&#8217;s Pizzeria<\/a> next door to our theater.\u00a0 It was mediocre, as most food in Times Square is.\u00a0 But it was easy and filling.\u00a0 Ben pointed out that the building used to be a church and I found a post about it on a blog I read call Scouting NY.\u00a0 He&#8217;s a scout for film locations and talks a lot about the history and hidden corners of the city.\u00a0 You can read about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoutingny.com\/americas-largest-pizzeria-is-in-a-19th-century-times-sq-church\/\">pizzeria here.<\/a>\u00a0 Also of note, our waiter was VERY interested to hear we were from Denver.\u00a0 He wanted to know if it was true, that you can just buy pot at a corner store.\u00a0 Yes, we assured him.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really true.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18351503312\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/395\/18351503312_c6b16f494f_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">We walked all of 20 paces to our matinee next door: Something Rotten! <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18351480112\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/c4.staticflickr.com\/8\/7763\/18351480112_f795625124_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">Loved it!\u00a0 Ben said he could tell he wasn&#8217;t getting all the inside theater jokes, but laughed a lot anyway.\u00a0 It was a bawdy, raucous show with fast pace, lots of jokes and puns, and great performers.\u00a0 We had all the original cast in our performance. \u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wSdo4itqot4?version=3&#038;rel=0&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span> <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">We came out of the theater into buckets of rain.\u00a0 We had a single umbrella to share so we hugged tight and ran underground.\u00a0 This was the part of the trip I was worried about.\u00a0 After the musical we had to make our way to Brooklyn, hopefully get dinner, and be at the concert before 8pm.\u00a0 Happily it turned out not to be a problem at all.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">When we arrived at Bedford we found shelter and a cell phone signal to do a quick dinner search.\u00a0 A couple blocks away was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themeatballshop.com\/page\/food\/\">The Meatball Shop<\/a> &#8220;We make balls.&#8221;\u00a0 (Side note: there is more than one meatball shop in Brooklyn when you search for it online.\u00a0 Because of course.\u00a0 I had to check the menu to be sure I found the same one.)\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">Framed by meat grinders with a window seat to watch the dripping passerby&#8217;s and the bronze horse head seller, we enjoyed a delicious and hearty meal.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18355498095\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8882\/18355498095_86a721b790_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18357035591\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/287\/18357035591_0fd74f01ce_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18329073516\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8810\/18329073516_f0e7de717c_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div>When the rain let up we called for the check and meandered to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musichallofwilliamsburg.com\/\">Music Hall<\/a> for the big finale to our trip: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theymightbegiants.com\/\">They Might Be Giants<\/a>!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some background first.\u00a0 Ben is a long time fan, at least since high school.\u00a0 I knew some of their songs but didn&#8217;t really appreciate them until Ben sent me mix CDs when we were dating long distance way way back in 1999.\u00a0 The music still takes me back to those early days in our relationship.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There was a concert in Boulder our first year of marriage.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t attend because I was still under 21.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There was a concert when I was 23.\u00a0 I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.blogspot.com\/2005\/07\/miami-meeting.html\">business meeting in Miami<\/a> and the boss wouldn&#8217;t let me book a flight home in time to see it.\u00a0 Then there was a hurricane, so we took an earlier flight home, that was delayed of course.\u00a0 Driving back from the airport at midnight I called Ben and he was at the concert with friends, about to come home too.\u00a0 I was so mad I missed it by hours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They came to Denver in my late 20s.\u00a0 I had a new baby and a crazy demanding job schedule and didn&#8217;t go.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Last Christmas I bought Ben a fan club membership for TMBG.\u00a0 It came with lots of goodies: t-shirt, first release signed albums, dial-a-song access, and two tickets to a concert of your choice with no expiration.\u00a0 We looked up their tour schedule &#8211; dang it.\u00a0 They skipped over Denver for Salt Lake City.\u00a0 But wait!\u00a0 Maybe we should see them . . . . . .. in Brooklyn!\u00a0 That would be so cool to see them on their home turf, with no kids to come home too, and we could do all this other cool stuff in New York.\u00a0 So really, this concert was the motivation and reason for taking the whole trip.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">Waiting in the rain.\u00a0 And waiting.\u00a0 And waiting.\u00a0 Doors were supposed to open at 7pm.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t get in until 7:45.\u00a0 Later the Johns apologized and said there was a problem with flooding that they had to clear and ensure safety.\u00a0 I guess that&#8217;s a good reason \ud83d\ude09<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/17734860113\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/9\/8757\/17734860113_e245d8cd08_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">What a show!\u00a0 I forgot to mention that Ben and I had sworn off concerts.\u00a0 So much standing, so loud, terrible manners from the audiences, late hours, spilled beer and stinky pot, etc etc.\u00a0 TMBG run a tight show.\u00a0 They are polite and professional, starting only 15 minutes late even with the flooding.\u00a0 Their fans are courteous, enthusiastic, and mostly reasonable folk.\u00a0 There was no opening act to suffer through.\u00a0 The venue was small, maybe 200 people or less.\u00a0 I was worried that I wouldn&#8217;t hear any favorite songs.\u00a0 This evening was planned as a show focusing on The Else.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a fine album, but you always want to hear classics when you see a show and I worried they wouldn&#8217;t play any.\u00a0 How wrong I was.\u00a0 It was like they read my mind and played a personal playlist:\u00a0 Don&#8217;t let&#8217;s start, Birdhouse in your soul, Particle Man, Robot Parade (!), Istanbul, She&#8217;s a jumping bean, Number three, and to cap it all off they played <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/006oU1HF1O8\">New York City<\/a> when I was IN NEW YORK CITY!!\u00a0 Fangirl in me exploded.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18169314709\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/c4.staticflickr.com\/8\/7741\/18169314709_67e4fcb01f_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rachelsmason\/18351471662\" title=\"New York City 2015 by rachelsmason, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"New York City 2015\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/1\/309\/18351471662_c497a2c765_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:left;\">I took these clips to share with Jack.\u00a0 He&#8217;s still learning that music comes from people.\u00a0 I wanted to show him the people who are &#8220;There are some giants.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center;
