Later I was generously given a spinning wheel, which I learned to use with trial and error, entirely self taught.\u00a0 I&#8217;m so happy with how this project turned out.\u00a0 I took nice pictures along the way to share my love of this old fashioned craft.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Start with roving.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/a6397-dsc_0001.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/a6397-dsc_0001.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>(This isn&#8217;t even the beginning.\u00a0 Shearing sheep is the beginning.\u00a0 I&#8217;m skipping that step, along with cleaning, scouring, combing, blending, and dying the wool.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/4df03-dsc_0003.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/4df03-dsc_0003.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This is a blend of merino wool and other fibers (I lost the tag.\u00a0 Silk? Alpaca?\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure, but it&#8217;s lusciously soft).\u00a0 This came from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/woolgatherings?section_id=6544671\">an etsy seller<\/a>.\u00a0 Browsing for roving on etsy is one of my favorite things to do on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Roving is combed fibers that are ready to spin.\u00a0 Pick an end, split into smaller strips if you prefer (I left it fat, making for longer color changes).\u00a0 Start spinning.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/31db8-dsc_0001.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/31db8-dsc_0001.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And keep spinning for hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Marvel at the gorgeous colors.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/728a1-dsc_0002.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/728a1-dsc_0002.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Marvel at how thinly you can spin after the hours of practice you have put in.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/f5eab-dsc_0003.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/f5eab-dsc_0003.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Hopefully you already decided whether to make single or double ply yarn.\u00a0 If it will be double ply, then hopefully you put some extra twist in the fiber.\u00a0 That way you can twist two strands together in the opposite direction, and hopefully achieve a balanced yarn.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a lot of hope.\u00a0 In other words, plan ahead or you&#8217;ll be frustrated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/96764-dsc_0007.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/96764-dsc_0007.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This is where my wheel comes in handy.\u00a0 It has a built in &#8220;kate,&#8221; the diagonal rack holding my bobbins.\u00a0 I can easily pull the yarn off those bobbins while plying it onto the center bobbin which is being spun by the wheel. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5e545-dsc_0008.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/5e545-dsc_0008.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m very good at plying.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve read some techniques, but my fingers just don&#8217;t do it well.\u00a0 Perhaps an intermediate level spinning class would help me figure out what I&#8217;m doing wrong.\u00a0 Perhaps I just need to do it slower with more patience.\u00a0 Plying is not my favorite part of the process.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/b8762-dsc_0012.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/b8762-dsc_0012.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Single spun yarn on the right bobbin, plyed yarn on the left bobbin.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/72c68-dsc_0015.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/a05a3-dsc_0015.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/>\u00a0<\/a><\/div>\n<p>Take the double ply yarn off the bobbin by winding it onto a &#8220;niddy noddy.&#8221; This is a wooden stick with two perpendicular rods at the ends that you wind yarn around.\u00a0 You can also use a chair&#8217;s back, but the niddy noddy is more compact and even.<\/p>\n<p>Look how balanced my yarn is!\u00a0 It lays loosely on my lap like string.\u00a0 It&#8217;s thrilling to get such plain, string-like results! <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6099a-dsc_0021.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/85068-dsc_0021.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I had a single bobbin leftover.\u00a0 I heard that you can ply onto itself using a center-pull ball.\u00a0 So I wound it on a niddy noddy and then made a ball.<\/p>\n<p>I love these even, green strings. \u00a0 They are fun to thrum.\u00a0 (Poor Ben had to endure me saying &#8220;Look! Look!&#8221; several times.\u00a0 You know you married right when he unwavering applauds your string making.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/b1c24-dsc_0017.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/b1c24-dsc_0017.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t like how that skein turned out (it&#8217;s the greener one you will see later) because the colors overlapped more and the twist didn&#8217;t stay very well.\u00a0 However, doing it shows the amount of twist I was talking about earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Over-twisted single ply:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/58ad8-dsc_0019.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/58ad8-dsc_0019.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/6099a-dsc_0021.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><br \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Now evened out by re-twisting in a double ply:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/7f0b6-dsc_0022.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>After coiling on the niddy noddy you can twist the hank onto itself.\u00a0 These knotted hanks are how yarn is often sold in stores.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/c5feb-dsc_0024.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/c5feb-dsc_0024.jpg?w=300\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>But I hadn&#8217;t &#8220;set the twist&#8221; yet.\u00a0 The yarn gets a quick soak in warm water.\u00a0 I added a wool wash from Fancy Tiger because it smells good.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2614a-dsc_0026.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/2614a-dsc_0026.jpg?w=199\" width=\"265\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/88f2b-dsc_0027.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/88f2b-dsc_0027.jpg?w=199\" width=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Gently drain the water and squeeze the hanks.\u00a0 You want to be very careful not to agitate the yarn or it will start to felt (that is, shrink and tighten up on itself).\u00a0 Roll the hanks up in a towel<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/0e4df-dsc_0028.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/77531-dsc_0028.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/>.<\/a><\/div>\n<p>and press to get out the excess water.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a hanks into center pull balls.\u00a0 Yarn stores will offer to do this for you when you buy hanks from them.\u00a0 For some reason, the workers in yarn stores take FOREVER to wind yarn.\u00a0 I have my own swift and winder to do this at home.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t believe I forgot to photograph that part!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what it would have looked like:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lulubliss.com\/2012\/02\/my-entry.html\">Trixie Cow<\/a>l pattern.\u00a0 I needed a complimentary yarn.\u00a0 I found a dark purple alpaca and silk blend from <a href=\"http:\/\/blueskyalpacas.com\/yarns\/alpaca-silk\/\">Blue Sky Alpacas<\/a> that worked nicely with my own yarn.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/93292-photo-8.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/93292-photo-8.jpg?w=225\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>After knitting the scarf it needs to be &#8220;blocked.&#8221;\u00a0 This will set the form and even out stitching.\u00a0 Another soak in the sink. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear:both;text-align:center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eaumaison.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/84cfa-dsc_0034.jpg\" style=\"margin-left:1em;margin-right:1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"265\" block the piece flat before joining in a loop.\u00a0 Be careful not to be too distracted by  Colin Firth&#8217;s smoldering portrayal of Mr. Darcy, or you might join the wrong ends together.\u00a0 That will make you angry and have  to spend a lot of time un-picking that rueful kitchener stitch.<\/p>\n<p>Then you are finished!\u00a0 Wait for daylight and take some final pictures.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t include your head if you slept in, have frizzy hair, and no make-up.\u00a0 Do include your kid because he&#8217;s cute 24\/7.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"
